Goodwill Launches Public Phase of Working to Build New Lives Capital Campaign

November 16, 2001

Today, Goodwill Industries of West Michigan announced the beginning of the public phase of its $1.5 million capital campaign to support the planned $3 million renovation project of its headquarters on Apple Avenue in Muskegon. The campaign, titled Working to Build New Lives, will support badly needed upgrades and reallocation of space which will improve overall productivity and efficiencies of services and operations.

At a press conference held at Cinema Carousel Theatre this morning, Goodwill President Richard Carlson stressed the critical need for the project as well as Goodwill's strong commitment to serving the community. "In the last five years, we have experienced a 255% increase in the number of people we serve. Our current facility - while well-maintained - is simply unable to meet the demands of this growth or sustain future expansion of our services. Representative of our total dedication and belief in the merits of this project, the Goodwill Board of Directors has committed $1.5 million of agency funds toward the renovation."

Special appreciation and recognition was given to significant lead gifts from The Community Foundation for Muskegon County, The Paul C. Johnson Foundation, The Hilt Foundation, and Mr. and Mrs. Midge Verplank.

"We are encouraged by the early results of our Family, Special Gifts, and Foundation Divisions," Campaign Co-Chair Ronald Gossett said.

Community Division Co-Chair J. D. Wallace announced special community partnerships and upcoming fund-raising events with The Muskegon Chronicle, Cinema Carousel Theatre, Plumb's Supermarkets, the Muskegon Fury, and The Lakes Mall. "The public phase of this campaign - strengthened by the participation and support of these significant partners - will provide lots of opportunities over the next several months for the community to get involved and support this worthwhile project," Wallace said.

Established in 1950, Goodwill Industries of West Michigan, Inc. is a nonprofit human service organization that provides skill development and work opportunities for people with barriers to employment. In the year 2000, Goodwill served 4,193 persons.
